Cornwall has seen dramatic lightning and heavy rain as a thunderstorm warning was issued by the Met Office.

The currently active yellow warning covers much of the South West.

Lightning first appeared over Newquay at 7pm, with reports and images of strikes emerging from locations such as St Austell, Truro, Falmouth, and Looe.

According to a Met Office forecast, "Thunderstorms are expected to move northeastwards across parts of England and Wales during the early hours of Friday, clearing during Friday morning."

The forecast also highlights potential hazards including gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 mph, frequent lightning, hail, and heavy rain of up to 20 mm within an hour.

While many areas may miss the worst of the weather, thunderstorms could bring disruption during Thursday night into Friday morning.

What should I expect?

There is a slight chance of power cuts and service disruptions to some homes and businesses.

Areas affected by lightning strikes or flooding may experience delays and cancellations to train and bus services.

Some homes and businesses could be quickly flooded, with possible damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and possible road closures.

What should I do?

Consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding and prepare a flood plan and emergency flood kit if necessary.

Secure moveable objects and temporary structures before gusty winds arrive, including bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences.

Check road conditions and transport timetables to avoid travel delays and amend plans if needed.

Prepare for potential power cuts by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.

Find safe shelter away from trees or structures likely to be struck by lightning. Move to lower ground if on an elevated area.

Stay updated with weather forecasts and be prepared for changes in weather warnings.
