Cornwall Council considers plans for skatepark, SEND school and housing
Recent applications include a pub conversion and new housing development
Plans for a former Wetherpoon pub, an indoor skatepark in a shopping centre and a new SEND school are among the latest planning applications submitted to Cornwall Council.
Every week more than 100 applications are validated by Cornwall Council and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals.
All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications – whether in support or objection.
The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some applications will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees.
No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Cornwall Council’s website.
New plans for former Wetherpoon pub
A plan has been submitted for the Hain Line at Tregenna Place, St Ives – a former Wetherpoon pub.
The existing bar and restaurant has been taken on by the applicants who intend to retain and refurbish the ground floor and basement areas for use as a new bar and restaurant with associated facilities with a kitchen on the first floor.
The remaining upper floor areas will then be converted to a mixture of hotel rooms toward the front of the building and workers’ accommodation at the rear.
A supporting statement says: “The internal alterations are designed to meet a need for additional hotel accommodation and workers’ accommodation within St Ives. Internal alterations are not considered to directly impact the outward conservation area.”
It is proposed that part of the central courtyard currently serving as a beer garden will be replaced by restaurant accommodation at ground floor level and staff accommodation at first and second floor level.
Early stage of plan for 45 new homes
A pre-application has been submitted by Gilbert and Goode Ltd for council advice concerning a proposal for 45 new homes, landscaping, open space and associated infrastructure on just over two hectares of land north of St Minver Cricket Ground.
Proposed development of new SEND school
Cornwall Council has received plans for a new special educational needs and disability (SEND) school on land adjacent to an existing SEND school in Redruth.
If approved, Penrose Court School will sit next to Cardrew Court School at Cardrew Industrial Estate, which opened September 2024.
The application proposes the erection of a three-storey building to provide teaching and administrative facilities to function as a fully independent school.
The plan would involve the reconfiguration of existing parking areas and utilisation of an area of overgrown planting. The existing access to Cardrew Way would be retained.
New indoor skatepark plans
Plans have been received to change a retail storage unit at Penzance’s Wharfside Shopping Centre into an indoor skatepark.
If approved the facility would be created behind shop units 2a, 3, 4 and 5 at the shopping centre on Market Jew Street.
It would provide a managed indoor environment for wheeled urban sports including BMX, scooters, inline skating and skateboarding. The facility would operate between 10am and 8pm on Monday to Saturday and 10am to 6pm on Sunday and bank holidays.
