The Government's being urged to improve storm resilience measures in Cornwall - after the county suffered severe damage during Storm Goretti.

Truro and Falmouth MP, Jayne Kirkham, has told the Commons that the storm exposed vulnerabilities in the county's infrastructure and emergency planning: "We lost just over a thousand trees, a hundred and twenty-one thousand customers lost power and thousands lost access to clean water. Roads were blocked, communities cut off and schools, care homes and hospitals faced unprecedented strain."

In her speech in Parliament, she also said the county could be used as a testing ground to pilot national resilience measures: "Cornwall is an ideal location to pilot national resilience measures and I hope the lessons learned will enable us across the country to become better prepared for extreme climate and weather challenges."

Cabinet Office Minister Dan Jarvis says the Government's committed to a review of the response to Storm Goretti: "The Cabinet Office has committed to a comprehensive review of the response to Storm Goretti which aims to ensure lessons across Government are captured to improve our response to future severe weather events."
