Cornwall MP pushes for urgent new post office site as Truro closure looms
Jayne Kirkham, MP for Truro and Falmouth, is calling for a new post office in Truro amid closure.
MP for Falmouth and Truro, Jayne Kirkham, is leading the charge to find a new site for the Post Office in Truro as the branch within TJ Jones is set to close on October 6.
She stresses the importance of a centrally located post office for residents who cannot reach branches further away, highlighting the essential services it provides to those who cannot rely on online alternatives.
"It's imperative for the people of Truro who can't use the internet," the MP said.
"There are many post office services that people need to come into the post office - and prefer to come into the post office to use - and they simply can't access other post offices out of town."
"Truro is the capital of Cornwall - it needs its post office back."
Concerns over the closure have been acknowledged by the Truro Business Improvement District (BID), which says it is actively searching for a new site to host a branch in the city centre.
The closure coincides with the impending shut down of a local bank, increasing the pressure on banking and postal services in the area.
Ms Kirkham said that while The Post Office have started looking for another store or shop to host a branch, she is concerned that there may be gap.
The nearest alternative post office is located at Trelander, across a dual carriageway, which she says may pose significant accessibility challenges for those without transport.
The MP said she will continue working with the mayor, relevant councils and the BID to apply continuous pressure to the Post Office ensuring a new site is secured as soon as possible.
