Cornwall Islamic Centre seeks support after vandal attack
Community rallies to support vandalised Islamic centre with donations and repairs
The Cornwall Islamic Community Centre is calling for public support after being targeted by vandals in a racially aggravated attack.
The incident occurred on Thursday (17 September) at the centre located on Quenchwell Road near Truro.
A vehicle was reportedly used to damage entrance gates, and a substance suspected to be oil was poured onto the grounds.
Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating and treating the act as racially aggravated criminal damage.
Since the attack, the centre has received overwhelming offers of support including flowers, repair work, and monetary donations.
Hasan Kilic, a voluntary Imam at the centre, expressed gratitude for the generous contributions and support from neighbours, saying, "We want to send thanks to the community. This gives us strength that we're not disliked."
Kilic confirmed that ÂŁ3,000 has already been raised for repair work and a new security system.
Residents are actively assisting, bringing cleaning materials and helping remove the spilled oil.
Cornwall Council has condemned the act, emphasising that there is no place for racism or faith-based hatred in the area.
Chief Superintendent Scott Bradley, police commander for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, stated that reassuring patrols would continue.
