Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) has ushered in a new era for patient care with its first procedure using Cornwall's first soft tissue robotic surgical system.

This marks a significant advancement in healthcare technology for the region.

Years of planning, investment, and specialist training have culminated in the introduction of world-class robotic-assisted surgery for local patients, enabling enhanced precision in complex procedures.

The robotic system allows surgeons to operate with exceptional accuracy in areas of the body that are difficult to access.

This technology is set to benefit those undergoing treatment for cancers of the digestive and urinary systems, endometriosis, and various metabolic conditions.

The inaugural procedure was carried out on 6th July.

James Clark, Divisional Chair for Surgery and Lead for the Soft Tissue Robotic Surgical Programme, highlighted the advantage of offering top-quality robotic surgery locally, reducing the need for patients to travel outside Cornwall.

Clark noted that the robotic system provides dexterity and improved vision beyond human capabilities, potentially leading to quicker recovery times for patients and enabling procedures previously unattainable in Cornwall.

The implementation of robotic surgery was supported by a £2 million funding from NHS England, with backing from local communities, Rotary Clubs across Cornwall, the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity, and campaigners advocating for its introduction.

This successful procedure marks the beginning of a transformative chapter for surgical services in Cornwall, with many patients expected to benefit from robotic-assisted surgery in coming years.
