A proposal for housing development on Cornwall's clifftop site has met with strong local opposition.

The planning meeting, held on 7th April, saw vigorous objections from locals regarding the proposal put forward by Westcountry Land Enterprises (SW) Ltd.

The development plan seeks permission to construct up to eight houses near Mevagissey CP School, within Cornwall's protected National Landscape.

Conservative divisional member Cllr James Mustoe brought the matter to the council's central area planning committee, expressing concerns about the effects on the National Landscape and the absence of affordable housing.

Although planning officers recommended approval, referencing a previous planning appeal where the inspector deemed the site development would not significantly harm the National Landscape, the council’s landscape team opposed it, citing potential damage.

The decision reflects a ‘tilted balance’ favouring the housing need during an ongoing crisis over landscape considerations.

As discussions continue, the community remains divided over the future of the site and the broader implications for Mevagissey village.
