Voters in Newquay are participating in a by-election today to fill the vacancy in the Cornwall Council following the death of councillor Kevin Towill earlier this year.

Kevin Towill, aged 46, who served as a Cornwall Councillor and former Mayor of Newquay, passed away from a brain tumour in February.

The by-election, taking place in the Newquay Porth and Tretherras ward, features six candidates vying for the position: Sandy Carter (Liberal Democrats), Topher Chard (Independent), Suzanne Featherstone (Labour and Co-operative), Lyndon Harrison (Reform UK), Abigail Jane Hubbucks (Green), and Oli Kimber (Conservative).

Voting Details

Polling stations opened at 07:00 BST and will remain open until 22:00 BST, allowing the local electorate to cast their votes.

Kevin Towill was admired for his longstanding commitment to public service and his passion for the Newquay community.

His contributions were recognised by Cllr Drew Creek who stated, "Kevin gave many years of dedicated service to Newquay, both as a Town Councillor and as a past Mayor. He continued to serve our community as a fellow colleague on Cornwall Council with commitment and care."

The results of the by-election will determine who will represent the community within Cornwall Council.
