West Cornwall MP Andrew George pushes for stronger ancient woodland protections
Calls for government action to safeguard Cornwall's ancient woodlands
Andrew George, MP for West Cornwall, has launched a Parliamentary Motion this week, for improved actions by the Government to restore and protect the UK’s ancient woodlands.
Ancient woodlands, defined as areas continuously wooded since at least 1600, currently cover a mere 2.5 percent of the UK. Despite their historical significance, these woodlands face threats from the integration of non-native species into ancient sites.
Andrew George describes the Government’s approach to nature restoration as lacking insight, stating the importance of recognising the inherent value of ancient woodlands.
"There aren't many and very few in Cornwall, but they are amongst the most vulnerable but also important wildlife and biodiversity habitats in the country in terms of the richness of the of the flora and fauna. It's really important that we give them some attention. The problem has been in the past is that certain practices, where there's been replanting has not always been using native varieties and that's lessened the nature."
Cornwall’s ancient sites, which have persisted for over four centuries, are particularly important, and George advocates for stronger protection measures to ensure these woods continue to thrive for future generations.
His campaign seeks to draw attention at a governmental level, urging action to maintain and protect the unique value these woodlands offer.
"We're asking for is simply that the government gives some priority to this."
