A prolific bike thief who stole bikes from across Cambridge has been jailed for a year.

Liam Berna, 33, of no fixed address, stole bikes from Newmarket Road, Cambridge Leisure Park and St Andrew’s Street between 2022 and 2024.

Twice when he was arrested in 2023 and 2024 he was found in possession of items including screwdriver, wrench, wire cutters, Stanley knife and a bracelet, which when pulled apart, revealed a small blade hidden inside.

In February, Berna was given a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

At Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday (6 October), Berna pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a bladed article, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of handling stolen goods, two counts of theft, breaching a CBO and bike theft. He was sentenced to a year in prison.

PC Rob Tindall, from the Cambridge Neighbourhood Team, said: “Berna is a prolific thief who targets bikes across the city.

“We’ll continue to target thieves like Berna who cause misery to cyclists across Cambridge and ensure they too are put before the courts.”
