A man's been arrested after police visited takeaways in Ely as part of a crackdown on illegal working and labour exploitation.

Pfficers, with support from Immigration, visited three fast-food outlets in the town last week to check the employment status of staff.

The operation forms part of an ongoing investigation into labour exploitation, which includes recruiting, transporting and employing workers without appropriate visas across the county.

At Ely King, in New Barns Road, officers found one man working illegally. He was arrested and later bailed. A delivery driver was also given advice regarding the need for appropriate business insurance.

Further checks revealed two men working illegally at Soham Pizza, in Red Lion Square and three men at Ely Kebab, in Market Street.

Detective Inspector Richard Vincent said: “Illegal working often goes hand-in-hand with exploitation and poor working conditions. These visits are about protecting vulnerable people and ensuring businesses comply with the law. We will continue to work with partners to tackle the issue and keep our communities safe.”
