Man who assaulted and spat at police officers in Cambridge jailed
A detention officer was also left concussed and needing hospital treatment
A man who hit and spat at police officers and staff after a night out in Cambridge has been jailed for 40 weeks.
Police were called to the city centre just after midnight, on 21 November 2023, with reports Anthony Harbridge had been captured on CCTV threatening nightclub door staff.
The 31-year-old ran from police as they tried to speak to him and then began lashing out at officers as well as spitting in their faces.
While in the custody cell, Harbridge tied his boxer shorts around his neck and lay motionless until a detention officer arrived. Once in the cell, Harbridge grabbed the officer by the throat and threw him against the wall.
At Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, Harbridge, of Woodville Road, Birkenhead, was sentenced to 40 weeks in prison after previously pleading guilty to criminal damage, three counts of assaulting a police officer and affray. He must also pay £750 in compensation to the detention officer who was left concussed and needing hospital treatment.
PC Sarah Pride, who investigated, said: “As police officers and detention officers, we come to work knowing the dangers of the role but being abused for doing our job is unacceptable.”
