A man, who punched and kicked a member of the public, after being refused a cigarette, has been jailed.

Corey Davis, 34, approached the victim outside Peterborough Central Library, on Broadway, at about 11am on 11 October last year.

Davis asked for a cigarette and when the man said no, he launched an unprovoked attack, punching him in the face and body.

CCTV footage captured the assault, which saw Davis push the victim towards the library doors and continue to kick him as he lay on the ground.

When members of the public came to help, Davis stopped, but picked up the victim’s phone and walked off. A member of the public gave chase and was able to recover the phone and return it.

The victim was left with a lost tooth, two loose teeth and bruising around his eye.

Davis was arrested for the attack and also for stalking, after it emerged he had been repeatedly attended a family member’s home throughout last year, demanding money.

He would bang on windows and doors, shout through the letterbox, ring the doorbell persistently and wait outside for hours.

He also bombarded the victim with daily messages and calls, ignoring pleas for him to stop.

At Cambridge Crown Court on Tuesday (16 June), Davis, of Eastfield Road, Peterborough, was sentenced to one year and three months in prison after admitting actual bodily harm, theft and stalking involving serious alarm or distress.

DC Thomas Curran said: “This was a sustained and violent attack over something trivial, which left the victim with painful injuries.

“Alongside this, Davis’ persistent and intimidating behaviour caused significant distress to his other victim.

“We welcome the sentence handed down and hope it provides some reassurance to those affected.”
