A man who attacked his partner on Christmas Day, leaving her fearing for her life, has been sentenced to one year and six months in jail.

Stephan Mann, 41, of Valerian Gardens, Soham, admitted to actual bodily harm and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour during a hearing at Peterborough Crown Court on 13th November.

The court heard how Mann had spent most of Christmas Day last year being verbally abusive towards his partner, accusing her of being unfaithful and making repeated threats to harm her.

Mann, who had been drinking heavily, told a friend earlier that day that he wished the woman was dead.

At around 4pm, his behaviour escalated when he tackled the victim to the floor and stamped on her head, threatening to kill her.

The attack ended when Mann’s friend intervened, helping the victim to get to safety and call the police to the property in Soham, near Ely.

Detective Constable James Lewis, who led the investigation, said: “Mann’s barrage of threats to hurt and kill the victim left her fearful for her life.

“The verbal abuse and physical violence was completely unacceptable, and I hope this sentence allows the victim to move on with her life.”

Police have urged victims of domestic abuse to seek help through the authorities or other support services.

“We would strongly urge anyone who is a victim of domestic abuse to contact police or call the national domestic violence helpline on 0808 2000 247,” Detective Constable Lewis said.
