Man jailed for dangerous driving after trying to outrun police in Huntingdon
Haider Ali drove over kerbs and through alleyways well over the speed limit before he was caught
A Huntingdon man who drove at almost twice the speed limit while attempting to escape police has been jailed for 18 months.
Haider Ali, a 27-year-old from Ambury Hill, drove through kerbs, alleyways, and roads after being spotted by officers in Coneygear Road, Huntingdon, at 10.40pm on 31st March 2024.
Ali’s black Vauxhall Mokka was noticed by officers for driving in a loop and prompted them to follow him.
He then turned into Thames Road, driving over the kerb at about 50mph in a 30mph zone.
Ali continued off-road along an alleyway to Nene Road where he crashed.
He tried to flee but was arrested nearby.
Following a trial at Cambridge Crown Court, Ali was found guilty of dangerous driving and sentenced on 5th January to one year and six months in prison.
He was also banned from driving for three years.
PC Chester Lewis, who was involved in the investigation, said: “Ali’s driving was incredibly dangerous and could have put pedestrians and other road users at serious risk of harm. Thankfully, it was not a busy time.
“This case and the resulting jail sentence show how seriously this kind of driving is taken by police and the courts.”
