A man from March has been sentenced to more than two years behind bars after carrying out a prolonged pattern of controlling and abusive behaviour towards his former partner.

42-year-old Janis Korsaks, of Hornbeam Close, was jailed for two years and two months after admitting to engaging in coercive and controlling conduct within an intimate relationship.

The abuse escalated after the victim attempted to end the relationship because of Korsaks' excessive drinking and increasingly aggressive behaviour.

On the night of 8 November last year, Korsaks repeatedly insisted that the victim leave her bed and come downstairs to speak with him. Later that night, he assaulted her while she was lying in bed and made threats towards her.

Police were contacted at around 2.30am the following morning, leading to Korsaks' arrest.

Investigators found that the incident was part of a wider pattern of abuse in the weeks before his arrest. During that period, Korsaks subjected the victim to both physical and emotional mistreatment and repeatedly threatened her if she chose to leave the relationship.

He also exercised significant control over her daily life, including managing her finances and monitoring her whereabouts. On several occasions, he demanded updates on her location, followed her movements, and even appeared unexpectedly at her workplace in an attempt to take her home.

At Huntingdon Law Courts on 28 May, Korsaks received a prison sentence of two years and two months. He was also made subject to a seven-year restraining order designed to protect the victim.

Additional allegations, including threats to kill, assault, intentional strangulation and threatening a person with a bladed article, were ordered to lie on file.

DC Jake Boreham-Dennis, who investigated, said: “This was a sustained pattern of controlling, coercive and violent behaviour that left the victim living in fear.

“Korsaks used threats, intimidation and violence to try to control her, and his behaviour escalated when she tried to leave.

“I hope this sentence provides some reassurance to the victim and shows we will take action against those who commit domestic abuse.

“If you are experiencing this type of behaviour, please know you are not alone - support is available and we will listen.”
