A man has been jailed for attacking his former partner twice, including an incident where he knocked her off her bike in Cambridge.

Robert Payne, a 39-year-old living in Alice Bell Close, Cambridge, was involved in an argument with his ex-partner near St Barnabas Church, Mill Road, on 21st August last year, during which he slapped her.

The next day, the pair were cycling along Trumpington Road when Payne deliberately barged into her, causing her to fly over the handlebars and sustain facial injuries.

Their relationship ended after another argument on 27th August, but Payne attempted to gain entry to her home in Trumpington that evening by smashing her bedroom window.

Police officers arrived at the scene and arrested Payne, who then kicked an officer in the torso.

At a hearing on Monday (16th March) at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court, Payne was sentenced to six months in jail. He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating and assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty.

He also pleaded guilty to criminal damage.

DC Jack Sillince, who investigated, said: “Payne’s attacks on his former partner would have been absolutely terrifying for her. Hopefully, some time in jail will allow him to reflect on his actions and ensure there’s no repeat in future.”
