King Charles praises design of Europe’s first eco mosque in Cambridge
Monarch impressed by sustainability and community focus
During a visit to Cambridge Central Mosque, King Charles expressed admiration for the architectural design and environmental efforts embodied in the mosque, dubbed Europe's first eco mosque.
Arriving in a maroon Bentley, the 77-year-old monarch was greeted by cheering well-wishers and went on to explore the mosque's eco-friendly features.
He was shown the building’s solar panels and highly efficient heat pumps that provide sustainability-focused heating and cooling.
The mosque also utilises grey water and rainwater for irrigation and flushing toilets and features natural lighting supported by LED bulbs.
King Charles engaged with dignitaries and joked with schoolchildren about interrupting their holidays, before unveiling a plaque commemorating Cambridge’s 75th anniversary of city status.
Impressed by the design, Charles remarked on the mosque’s contributions to the Muslim community and Cambridge, highlighting its role in promoting integrated faith activity.
Charles' visit also included opening the new Whittle Laboratory, a hub for innovation in net-zero aviation and energy linked to his Sustainable Markets Initiative founded in 2020.
This initiative has facilitated collaboration and investment in the laboratory, designed to drive disruptive advances in sustainable technology sectors.
Local residents and mosque trustees expressed delight at hosting the King, noting his keen interest and conversational approach during the visit.
