Cambridgeshire Police are urging phone owners to be vigilant following a spate of mobile phone thefts in Cambridge.

The incidents involved people dressed in black clothing with face coverings riding e-bikes and e-scooters and took place in Newmarket Road, Trumpington Road, Jesus Lane, Parker’s Piece, Midsummer Common, near Cambridge North Station, Emmanuel Street and Christ’s Pieces between Saturday 8th and Monday 10th November.

Inspector Shawn Emms said: ā€œWe understand these incidents are concerning for the community. An investigation is ongoing along with high visible and plain clothed patrols of the areas. We urge anyone who witnesses and suspicious behaviour or has information to contact is immediately.ā€

iPhone users are urged to consider disabling the iPhone control centre on the locked screen in their settings to prevent thieves being able to put the phone in ā€˜aeroplane’ mode when the phone is locked.

Insp Emms added: ā€œWhere possible, also keep your phone out of sight when not in use and be cautious when using your phone in public. Store your phone in a zipped bag or pocket and keep them close to you.ā€

The force has called on people to call 101 or 999 in an emergency if someone's seen acting suspiciously or riding mopeds/ebikes/escooters in a manner that's concerning.
