New order established in Huntingdon to fight anti-social behaviour
Council and police collaborate on new safety initiative
Huntingdon District Council and Cambridgeshire Constabulary have launched a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area.
The PSPO, which went into effect today, aims to improve safety and quality of life for residents and businesses following community feedback about rising crime and disruptive behaviour.
Huntingdonshire Neighbourhood Inspector Colin Norden said: “This PSPO gives us the tools we need to address persistent issues, such as anti-social behaviour including street drinking, public urination and defecation, vandalism, and other activities that disrupt public spaces. With this order in place, we can respond more effectively to the concerns of residents and businesses, working together to create an environment and a space that are enjoyable and accessible for all.”
Councillor Debbie Mickelburgh, Executive Councillor for Communities, Health and Leisure, said: “This Public Spaces Protection Order demonstrates our commitment to working in partnership with Cambridgeshire Constabulary and the local community to tackle anti-social behaviour. Residents and businesses have been clear that action is needed, and this order provides additional tools to help address behaviours that impact people’s enjoyment of Huntingdon town centre. Together, we can help ensure Huntingdon remains a safe and welcoming place for all.”
The PSPO, valid for three years, covers Huntingdon town centre and the area within the ring road. It will be subject to annual review.
