Fines begin on Mill Road in Cambridge
Mill Road bridge bus gate enforcement his resuming today after repair work was completed
Fines will be issued to non-exempt vehicles using Mill Road bridge from Thursday, 13 March, as enforcement of the bus gate restriction resumes following the completion of repairs to a burst water main.
The restriction has been in place since December 2024, but a phased approach was introduced to allow drivers time to adjust. Initially, only warnings were issued, with formal warning notices sent in February. Now, fines will apply to any non-exempt vehicles crossing the bridge.
Councillor Neil Shailer, vice-chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Since last year, we have been doing a phased approach to the Mill Road bridge bus gate restriction. This was to allow people time to get used to it and encourage drivers not to drive over the bridge.
“We’re now moving to the next stage. If a vehicle is not exempt, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) may be issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle. If a vehicle has not applied for an exemption and receives a PCN, the registered keeper can make a representation using the details on the Penalty Charge Notice and also apply for an exemption on our website.
“Nobody wants to be fining people, which is why we introduced the restriction in a measured way.”
The bus gate allows exemptions for certain vehicles, including those driven by blue badge holders, who must apply for an exemption online. More information on exemption criteria and operational guidance is available on the council’s website.
Future public realm improvements for Mill Road are expected, subject to funding and further consultation.
