Eynesbury recycling centre blaze to last until weekend - fire service
200 tonnes of waste went up in flames at the site yesterday
Firefighters are expecting a blaze that ripped through a recycling centre in Eynesbury to continue until the weekend.
Around 200 tonnes of waste went up in flames at the site on Marston Road yesterday, although it's unclear what caused the fire.
"This will probably be at least till the weekend that this will be burning, but as the days go on, there will be an opportunity for the site owners to try and encourage the burn," Group Commander Jamie Johnson, of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said.
"The fire surrounding the building has been contained."
More than 25 firefighters, including crews from Bedfordshire, were called to the fire just before 11am.
One business close to the recycling centre happened said it may have to close temporarily due to fire damage.
Mr Johnson said fire crews will allow the blaze to burn naturally to not encourage more smoke to blow across towards local businesses and nearby homes.
"We will have a presence here for a significant time while that does burn away to make sure the fire doesn't spread again," he added.
James lives close by to the recycling centre and found out about the fire after looking on social media.
"I immediately looked out the window and saw the smoke plume from my house which is less than a mile away," he said.
"It was pretty busy; there were six appliances here, I believe there were two Bedfordshire crews here as well (and) the building was completely ablaze.
"I believe this building has suffered fires before, but I don't know if they've been as serious as this one."
The recycling centre blaze comes as crews continue to keep a large fire at Holme Fen Nature Reserve near Peterborough under control.
Wayne Swales, incident commander, said more than 50 firefighters are tackling the blaze with 12 fire engines and other specialist resources on hand.
