A man involved in the supply of cocaine and cannabis in Peterborough has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after police uncovered evidence on a mobile phone linking him to drug trafficking.

31-year-old, Aqib Khan, first came to the attention of officers on 17 February last year when they observed him driving a blue Volkswagen Golf in a manner they considered suspicious in Peterborough city centre.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but Khan quickly turned into Bright Street before continuing towards Waitrose on Mayors Walk. After parking, he entered the supermarket while officers searched the car.

During the search, police discovered three bags containing smaller quantities of cannabis packaged for sale, along with three wraps of cocaine, £265 in cash and a mobile phone.

Examination of the device uncovered photographs of Khan and his relatives, as well as messages that investigators said connected him to the distribution of illegal drugs.

Khan was arrested and later released while inquiries continued.

On 18 January, Khan was travelling as a passenger in a black Nissan Qashqai when it was stopped by police in St Johns Street, Boongate. Officers found him sitting with two mobile phones on his lap.

A search of the vehicle and its occupants led to the discovery of a significant amount of cash, cannabis and a small quantity of cocaine.

Khan, of Ash Fold in Bradford, admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply and pleaded guilty to offences relating to the supply of both cannabis and cocaine.

At Cambridge Crown Court on 12 June, he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

Det Sgt Sam Moorby said: “Khan clearly didn’t learn his lesson after being arrested the first time and continued to offend whilst on bail.

“There was some compelling evidence that left him little choice but to plead guilty. I’m pleased he has now appeared in court and been jailed for his crimes.”

DC Elouise Hicks, who also led one of the cases, said: “Drug dealing contributes to anti-social behaviour and other criminality in our communities. Combatting it is a key priority for us.

“We will continue our efforts to identify drug dealers and bring them before the courts to face justice for their actions.”
