A drink-driver has been jailed for a crash that resulted in life-changing injuries, leaving one victim partially paralysed.
Samiul Islam, 25, was speeding on the A1307 in Huntingdon around 12:40am on 2nd August 2024 when he lost control and collided with a stationary Mercedes.
The impact propelled the vehicle nearly 30 meters down the road, despite the handbrake being engaged.
The 62-year-old driver of the Mercedes sustained injuries leading to partial paralysis, while a 23-year-old woman in Islam’s car suffered a fractured spine and collarbone.
Islam's breath test at the scene showed he was over the legal limit, registering 42 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
At Peterborough Crown Court, Islam received a sentence of two years and six months, admitting two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He was also disqualified from driving for five years and ten months.
Judge Matthew Lowe referred to the injuries as “profound, life-changing and permanent,” noting the emotional and psychological impact alongside physical injuries.
PC Peter Smith from the road policing unit commented, “The impact of the collision on the victims has been significant. Islam's dangerous driving has caused enduring consequences.
"Islam’s actions were labelled as preventable and he will face accountability behind bars."
