Christmas driving checks begin across Cambridgeshire
Drivers encouraged to plan ahead and avoid driving under the influence
Cambridgeshire Police are renewing efforts this festive season to combat drink and drug driving. Officers will conduct roadside checks throughout December, urging drivers to make firm plans for getting home and avoid taking risks behind the wheel.
The campaign is supported by the return of the ‘I’m DES’ initiative. A record 43 pubs and venues across the county will offer free or discounted soft drinks to designated drivers as part of the scheme which aims to foster a safer culture on the roads.
Participants simply need to inform staff in participating venues that they are the designated driver and may need to show their car keys if asked.
PC Adrian Boddington, Cambridgeshire Police’s casualty reduction officer, emphasised the importance of planning ahead, saying: “Drink and drug driving is a choice, your choice. Before you get behind the wheel please think – is it really worth the risk?”
PC Boddington also reminded the public of the dedicated hotline which allows people to report others they suspect of driving under the influence. He said: “One call could save a life.”
The confidential hotline - 0800 032 0845 - operates 24/7, while individuals in immediate danger should call 999.
Darryl Preston, Cambridgeshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, expressed gratitude to licensed venues supporting the campaign, stating: “We all have a shared responsibility to prevent tragedies on our roads. There is never an excuse for drink driving.”
In addition to promoting the ‘I’m DES’ scheme, Cambridgeshire Police encourages everyone to visit their website for more information about drink and drug driving laws and the associated dangers.
Drivers across Cambridgeshire are urged to plan their journeys this festive season to ensure everyone gets home safely.
