Chatteris firefighters rescue dog trapped in barbed wire fence
Twiggy needed a vet trip after being freed by the on-call crew
A dog left trapped and in pain in a barbed wire fence has been rescued by firefighters in Chatteris.
The on-call crew was called out at around 11am on Thursday 3rd September after the dog, named Twiggy, became entangled.
Working with Twiggy's owner, firefighters kept her calm before carefully cutting the wire around her and carrying her back to the owner's vehicle.
She avoided serious injury but was taken to the vet as a precaution.
The crew returned to their station by 1pm.
What the fire service said
Watch Commander Rob Edwards from Chatteris Fire Station said: "Twiggy was entangled in the barbed fire fence, so was obviously in some pain and distressed. With the help of the owner we kept Twiggy calm and carefully cut the wire around her, then carried her back to the owner's vehicle. Luckily, she didn't sustain a serious injury, but did require a trip to the vet as a precaution.
"Twiggy and her owner were very grateful, particularly to our Fire Control who were able to quickly and calmly gather the details to share with the crew, but also give reassurance that help was on the way."
Reaching rural incidents
The fire service said incidents in rural areas can be challenging for crews to locate quickly.
It suggested having the what3words app installed on a mobile phone, which helps control staff pinpoint the exact location of an incident and share it with the crew.
On-call firefighters
The firefighters at Chatteris are on-call, responding to emergencies around their other commitments.
To be an on-call firefighter you need to be within five minutes of your local fire station, either at work or at home, and have a good general level of fitness.
