The Oxford to Cambridge Growth Corridor will improve the lives of working people, according to the Chancellor.

Rachel Reeves has previously said investing in housing, transport and infrastructure between the two cities will make the area "Europe's Silicon Valley".

Ms Reeves claimed the scheme would add £78 billion to the UK's economy by 2035.

Since her speech on growth in January, there have been calls for "the right kinds of investment" in infrastructure from Bicester and Woodstock's Liberal Democrat MP Calum Miller.

'More money in people's pockets'

"It's why we are investing in new transport links, new reservoirs, new housing, new lab space and I want that benefit to be felt right along that growth corridor," Ms Reeves said.

"That's what we want to achieve, a faster growing economy to put more money into working people's pockets."

In her plans for growth earlier this year, Ms Reeves said Labour is "not prepared to miss out on the opportunities any longer (and) we are going further and faster to unlock the potential of the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor."

She also announced funding for transport projects, including the East West Rail, connecting Cambridge to Oxford and covering places such as Bedford and Milton Keynes.

Labour claims East West Rail will boost the Oxford-Cambridge economy by £6.7 billion per year by 2050.

Ms Reeves said investing in the rail link allows the Government to "recognise the advantage of having some of the best universities in the world here in Britain.

"Those cities are both struggling to expand and that's why we're investing in transport, making it easier to build housing to get Britain building again."
