Cambridgeshire site on list of 'remarkable' historic places granted protection this year
Historic England is celebrating 19 specific historic buildings and places that have been received protection in England in 2025
A shop in Cambridgeshire is among a list of places being commemorated by Historic England after being granted protection this year.
The public body awarded Adams Heritage Centre in Littleport grade two listed status in May for "its exceptional preservation of Victorian commercial architecture."
"We like every year to pull out what we consider to represent the tremendous variety and diversity of buildings and places across England that have significant special architectural historic interest," Charles O'Brien, Historic England's listing and architectural research director, said.
Across England, 199 historic buildings and sites have been added to the National Heritage List for England in 2025.
Now, Historic England is celebrating and shining a spotlight on the stories of 19 of what they say are some of the 'remarkable' sites.
That includes Adams Heritage Centre, which its shopfront still has many original features including large display windows, ornate wrought-iron folding gates, etched glass with painted lettering and a recessed entrance.
The business gained a national reputation for fitting and maintaining Hagan Norwegian ice skates, widely used by fen skaters.
Historic England said under owner John Henry Adams, the shop became a hub for the sport, even importing skates from Oslo and distributing them across the UK.
"It really enables us to reflect the full story of the nation's history, but also because these places are special and it's often not obvious to people why they are special," Mr O'Brien added.
"So we want to be able to tell the stories behind these buildings, why they're important either as designs or for the history that they express, and that means that then in the future if there are plans for change that special interest is prioritised so that change is done sensitively."
New additions to the National Heritage List for this year comprised of 173 listings, 21 scheduled monuments and five parks and gardens, with a further 129 amendments made to existing listings.
