A woman from Cambridge found herself at the centre of a suspected romance scam after attempting to sell her home to move to the USA and marry Jay Harrington, an actor known for his role on the TV show S.W.A.T.

Local estate agents quickly contacted police when the woman discussed her plans to move overseas and wed the actor.

The agents feared it was a scam, with the woman at risk of losing everything if she proceeded with the home sale and transferred the proceeds to the individual claiming to be Mr Harrington.

Following this report, cyber and fraud prevention officers intervened, discovering the woman had already sent hundreds of pounds to various addresses in the UK and US.

She had also bought a wedding dress for the anticipated event.

Authorities have put safeguarding measures in place to protect her from further financial loss.

Police say romance scams are increasingly common, often targeting vulnerable individuals.
