Two burglars who stole jewellery worth nearly £50,000 from a Cambridge home have been jailed.
Matthew and Jason Turner, who are not related, broke into the property in Victoria Road at about 1.30am on 13 April.
A short time later the victims, a man and woman, returned home to discover their front door ajar and the pair leaving the house carrying full pillowcases.
They pushed the man over and one of them shouted “stab him” before they left the area on bicycles and police were called. No knife was seen during the incident.
When the victims went inside their home, they noticed jewellery had been stolen, along with an iPad, a recently delivered parcel containing clothing and two pillowcases.
Officers attended, with one discovering jewellery boxes scattered on the ground as he followed the direction of the suspects’ escape.
They were identified through CCTV footage and arrested the same day.
When Matthew Turner, 39, was arrested officers found a call logged to a jeweller in St Ives on his mobile phone from earlier in the day.
They both admitted the burglary.
Most of the jewellery was found scattered on Midsommer Common, as well as being hidden on Coldham’s Common and Jesus Green.
On Friday (22 August) at Cambridge Crown Court Matthew Turner, of Vicarage Terrace, Cambridge, was jailed for two years and nine months.
At the same hearing Jason Turner, 35, of no known address, was jailed for two years and three months.
DC Callum Fullwood said: “This must have been a terrifying experience for the victims as they returned home to find two burglars leaving their property.
“I’m pleased they were apprehended quickly and most of the jewellery has now been recovered. The items have sentimental, as well as monetary value, so it was a relief for the victims to be reunited with their property. I hope the final remaining items are found and returned.
“The defendants clearly thought nothing of the impact their crimes could have on other people.
“Tackling burglary is one of our priorities and we have specialist teams working hard to bring offenders to justice.”
