Cambridge United have been relegated from League One after a 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion today.

That result puts an end to their four-year stay in the third tier of English football after winning promotion from League Two under then head coach Mark Bonner.

After Bristol Rovers lost to Reading earlier in the day, a win would have placed the U's two points behind Burton ahead of their final game of the season against champions Birmingham City at the Abbey Stadium next Saturday.

That's if Albion dropped points at home to Wigan in their game in hand on Tuesday night.

Both teams ended the first half at the Pirelli Stadium with 10 men after Cambridge's Ryan Loft and Burton's JJ McKiernan were sent off.

Cambridge were dealt another blow when Jón Dadi Bödvarsson struck three minutes after the restart.

Elias Kachunga pulled a goal back for the visitors on 84 minutes, before Dylan Williams scored three minutes into stoppage time to condemn Neil Harris' men to the drop.

Ex-Millwall boss Harris - who returned to the club in February after Garry Monk left - has won four of his 14 games in charge.
