Cambridge United secure defensive boost with Sean Raggett loan signing
31-year-old joins from Rotherham United for the remainder of the season
Cambridge United have strengthened their defensive lineup with the loan signing of Sean Raggett, who joins from Rotherham United until the end of the season.
The 31-year-old defender brings extensive experience to the squad, having begun his career at Dover Athletic before moving to Lincoln City, where he played a significant part in the team’s promotion from the National League. During his time at Lincoln City, Raggett gained national attention with his winning goal against Burnley in the FA Cup Fifth Round.
Raggett later signed for Norwich City, spending much of his time on loan before joining Portsmouth in 2020. During his tenure at Portsmouth, he made 227 appearances and earned Player of the Season honours in 2021/22. He also contributed to the club’s promotion to the Championship in the 2023/24 season. In May 2024, Raggett moved to Rotherham United on a permanent deal.
Speaking about the move, Raggett said, “As soon as I heard about the interest, I wanted to come down here and I am delighted to get it over the line. I spoke with the manager and got that feeling that this would be a great place for me to play my football.
“The boys have been doing fantastic recently so I will come in to try and help as I can. I feel great and in really good shape. I’ll be ready to be called upon when needed.”
Cambridge United manager Neil Harris added, “I am delighted with the acquisition of Sean Raggett to boost the defensive ranks. He brings huge experience, not only at this level but of competing at this stage of the season to be successful.
“He will add aggression, composure and ability into our defensive unit, and I look forward to seeing his qualities within the group.”
Raggett will wear the number 28 shirt during his time with Cambridge United.
