The Cambridge United board has publicly reaffirmed its support for head coach Garry Monk, highlighting injuries and a stretched budget as key factors behind the team’s recent struggles.

In a New Year’s press release, the board acknowledged the club’s disappointing on-pitch performance but expressed confidence in Monk’s ability to guide the team forward with a strengthened squad.

“We believe we have a good Head Coach in Garry,” the board stated. “The injuries we have suffered throughout the season have meant he has struggled to field anywhere near a fully fit squad on a weekly basis.”

The board pointed to the club’s small squad size and limited financial resources as significant challenges, noting that several players have been overextended due to a lack of rotation options. However, they praised owners Paul Barry and Mark Green for releasing additional funds to reinforce the team during the January transfer window.

“At a time of considerable financial pressures across the club, the owners will be releasing additional funds to enable us to strengthen the squad in a number of key areas this January,” the statement continued.

The board also highlighted the players’ continued commitment to Monk, describing their support as a “key factor” in the decision to maintain the current management structure.

While acknowledging the club’s precarious position in League One, the board remains optimistic. “We know we are in a real fight to preserve our League One status. There is still half the season remaining and a lot of football to be played. We have been here before and know from experience that a lot can change quickly.”

An internal review of the first-team football operations is nearing completion, with the board aiming to learn and implement lessons to improve future campaigns.
