Cambridge South station opening date revealed
More than 1.8 million passengers are expected to visit every year
Passengers can soon catch trains from a new railway station in Cambridge that is due to open next month.
Services will start calling at Cambridge South on the 28th June with more than 1.8 million passengers expected to visit every year.
As the first station with the Great British Railways branding, Cambridge South will provide nine trains per hour to Cambridge city centre and direct access to the Biomedical Campus.
The campus contributes £4.7 billion annually to the UK economy, supporting 20,000 jobs, and is expected to grow further with this new connection.
The station will also offer routes to London, Birmingham, Stansted Airport, and international services via St Pancras, with up to 20 trains during peak times.
Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy highlighted the government’s £250 million funding:
"Backed by £250 million government investment, Cambridge South will open up access to jobs, homes and world-class facilities for people across the region, boosting the growth of the Biomedical Campus as one of the most important engines of growth in the country.
"As the first new Great British Railways branded station, the opening is an important milestone for our railways and a sign of the real change public ownership will deliver."
Jeremy Westlake from Network Rail shared excitement about welcoming passengers, calling it a great team effort to improve travel options.
The new station has been built with government funds, supported by AstraZeneca and local partners.
Regulated fares are frozen until March 2027 to keep costs down for travellers.
