Sinkhole 'size of family car' remains on Cambridge road one month later
It's unclear what caused the sinkhole to appear
Work on a busy Cambridge road is still not yet done almost a month since a sinkhole was first found.
Milton Road between Hurst Park Avenue and the Elizabeth Way roundabout remains closed after the sinkhole first appeared on June 22.
Cambridgeshire County Council had planned for repairs to be done this week, before an unknown source of water was found underneath the road by Anglian Water.
"Just before the planned concrete pour, Anglian Water identified failures within their network at the location - this issue needs to be resolved by Anglian Water," a county council spokesperson said.
Anglian Water told us that repairs to a damaged sewer connection have now been completed and that it's continuing to work alongside the council to fix the problem.
"An independent specialist is carrying out a further assessment of the site to help establish the cause of the sinkhole," an Anglian Water spokesperson said.
"It is important that this work is completed before we agree next steps and reinstatement works with the council.
“We will carefully consider the findings as soon as they are available and will continue working constructively to support the safe reopening of the road."
Before the water failures were found, concrete was due to be poured into the sinkhole to create a slab.
The council - which described the sinkhole as "the size of a family car" - said this would take several days to dry out and harden, before work to excavate the area around the sinkhole could take place and resurfaced.
"The roads and pavements have been so disastrously looked after for the last 10 years, it's not surprising they can't get their act together," one passer-by said.
While another person who lives close to the roadworks has given the sinkhole a name
"I call it a holy hole," they said.
"People keep coming here (and) I was thinking of setting up some lemonade stand and turning it into some holy pilgrimage area."
Cambridgeshire County Council said it's unclear when this section of Milton Road will reopen.
