University of Bristol opens first international campus in Mumbai
Bristol University's new campus in Temple Quarter paired with another in India
The University of Bristol has achieved a historic milestone by officially opening its first international campus in Mumbai.
This significant event coincides with the upcoming 150th anniversary of the University next month, and it follows the opening of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus earlier this week.
Both campuses, despite being separated by approximately 4,500 miles, are designed to equip students with knowledge and skills in fast-advancing fields such as data science and finance.
Mumbai was selected for the new campus due to its strong reputation in technology, innovation, and the arts, which are closely aligned with Bristol's strengths.
The Mumbai Enterprise Campus reflects the University's commitment to India and its confidence in the country's talent and innovation ecosystem.
Official approval for the campus was granted in July 2025 during a celebratory event in New Delhi, marking the fifth anniversary of India’s National Education Policy 2020.
Located at the Cignus Powai development, a hub for innovation and technology in Mumbai, the campus aims to strengthen collaboration between India and the UK.
Professor Evelyn Welch, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, emphasised the significance of this moment in the University's history and its relationship with Maharashtra.
She stated that the Mumbai Enterprise Campus aims to create opportunities for research, innovation, and knowledge exchange, providing students with a world-class education focused on future challenges and opportunities.
During the opening event, esteemed writer and Bristol alumna Shanta Gokhale was awarded an honorary degree, becoming the first graduate of the Mumbai Enterprise Campus.
The celebration also included the four recipients of the University of Bristol-Government of Maharashtra Scholarship, which offers a 100% tuition fee waiver and internship opportunities at the Chief Minister's Office.
Student Neha Kushe expressed her gratitude for the scholarship, highlighting the opportunity to pursue her aspirations in Finance and Investment at the new campus.
Professor Michelle Jones, Director and Executive Dean of the Mumbai Enterprise Campus, expressed the positive reception from students and parents, outlining the campus's vision for connecting academic excellence with industry, innovation, and society.
Alison Barrett MBE, Country Director India, British Council, congratulated the University on its new campus, reflecting the growing momentum of India–UK education collaboration.
The campus aims to expand access to globally recognised education, strengthen industry and research connections, and equip learners with skills and international perspectives.
