Bristol's biggest celebration of African and Caribbean heritage, St Pauls Carnival, is back for another year.

Organisers have planned a "scaled back" iteration of the beloved event, to keep the day affordable and future-proof.

This year's theme is "Roots of Resistance", with the carnival marking the 60th anniversary of the Race Relations Act by honouring the legacy of activism in Bristol.

"The essence of carnival is an unapologetic display of African and Caribbean heritage," said director Ricardo Sharry.

"Through music and dance it celebrates our culture in poetry, and activism in community strength.

"We're educating people who aren't from the African and Caribbean diaspora, giving them a deeper understanding," Ricardo added.

What can we expect from this year's event?

The day begins with an Elders Brunch held in Circomedia, to celebrate and thank the people who started the carnival 60 years ago.

Local elders are invited to enjoy a traditional Caribbean brunch alongside musical performances.

From midday, the party begins with music, flag and mask making, African drumming and food.

Children will be taking part in a Youth Parade and talent show, which organisers hope will be "a moment for young people to feel powerful, proud and seen".

The day will close with a party through the night, featuring DJs Booty Bass, Ngaio and Garoess.

"Expect an inclusive, empowering space where basslines meet belonging and the dancefloor becomes a site of celebration and resistance."
