South Gloucestershire Council has agreed to changes in its loan arrangements with Aerospace Bristol museum to help the charity build towards long-term sustainability.

During the cabinet meeting in October, councillors approved amendments to the loan terms with a revised repayment schedule intended to support the museum’s plans to invest in its visitor experience.

This decision aligns with the council’s aim to secure the museum's future as a vital local attraction and heritage site.

Councillor Chris Willmore, a member of the council cabinet and heritage champion, discussed the decision's significance.

He said: "The aerospace industry has been at the heart of our area for generations.

It is why so many people came here to work, build their lives and raise their families.

These are the places where our stories are kept alive."

The museum, located in Filton, features the last Concorde to fly, Concorde Alpha Foxtrot, and showcases interactive exhibits about aviation history and engineering.

Sally Cordwell, chief executive of Aerospace Bristol, expressed gratitude for the council's continued backing, particularly as the museum navigates financial challenges due to rising costs.

She said, "Aerospace Bristol is the only museum dedicated to the area’s extraordinary aerospace heritage."

The museum also provides educational initiatives, welcoming over 13,000 young people through various programmes and is poised to play a role in regional skills development.

Aerospace Bristol offers activities for families and youth organizations, aiming to inspire future engineers and pilots through STEM workshops and exhibits.

The venue supports both local heritage and community activities, enhancing its value to South Gloucestershire.
