A section of Apex Park in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge has been cordoned off after suspected pieces of unexploded wartime ordnance were found during construction works.

Police attended the scene after a contractor reported the discovery of items, believed to be mortar shells and a grenade, most likely dating back to World War II.

Specialist teams are assessing the items and a 50-metre safety cordon is in place.

Construction activities on the east side of the lake have also been halted as a precaution.

Somerset Council is working on securing the site temporarily, and a specialist contractor is expected to assess and remove any remaining ordnance.

The public are being asked not to enter the site for safety reasons.

Somerset Council say events such as the Park Run scheduled for this weekend will continue as planned, but there may be some changes to the route.
