The Great South West Partnership has released a new report describing the region's pivotal role in supporting the UK’s nuclear energy ambitions.

The report, titled A New Nuclear Future, highlights how the Great South West’s nuclear capabilities can underpin national energy security, drive economic growth, and help the UK achieve its clean energy goals. According to the report, the region could provide up to 11% of the nation’s clean energy demand by 2035.

Launched at the Nuclear South West: Securing Energy, Driving Growth event, the report showcases the region’s robust nuclear ecosystem. This includes nuclear-related employment supporting over 30,000 jobs, strong supply chains, advanced skills training, and ongoing innovation. Somerset’s Hinkley Point C, the first new nuclear power station in the UK in a generation, has already contributed £5.3 billion in regional company spending and supported over 1,300 businesses. Workforce development spans 29 colleges, universities, and specialist centres such as the National College for Nuclear run by UCS College Group.

The report highlights the Great South West as ready to accelerate delivery for future nuclear projects, such as Small and Advanced Modular Reactors. It argues the region benefits from existing licensed sites, familiar communities and extensive experience in managing nationally significant projects like Hinkley Point C.

Professor Dame Judith Petts DBE, Chair of the Great South West Energy Security Programme Board, said: “The UK is entering a decisive decade for economic growth and energy security, and the Great South West is ready to play a leading role in that national mission. A New Nuclear Future demonstrates why the region is uniquely placed to support the Government on its growth ambition, and clean energy - including nuclear - is central to that. With the right partnership working between Government, industry, and the region, the Great South West can play a pivotal role in securing clean, reliable power for the UK, while creating long-term economic value.”

The report also emphasises the potential to unlock high-quality jobs, increase advanced manufacturing capabilities, and support wider clean energy applications like hydrogen and sustainable fuels.

Skills development is central to the report, with the National College for Nuclear and regional education hubs playing key roles. Andy Berry CBE, UCS College Group CEO, commented: “Delivering the UK’s nuclear ambitions depends on having the right people with the right skills, in the right places. The region has built a strong, flexible skills ecosystem that supports the nuclear industry today while preparing for the new technologies of tomorrow. This report recognises the critical role of education and training in creating a resilient, highly skilled workforce that can support long-term nuclear programmes, and generate good jobs for local communities to benefit from the opportunities that nuclear power can bring.”

The Great South West Partnership continues working alongside partners, including Nuclear South West, to advance clean energy investment and fulfil national energy priorities.
