Part of Pero's Bridge in Bristol Harbour has collapsed, with a section now submerged in water following a hydraulic malfunction.

The collapse occurred shortly before 11pm on Saturday, according to Bristol City Council, leaving one of the bridge's horn-shaped sculptures in the water and causing damage to the hydraulic ram.

Bristol City Council confirmed that no one was injured during the event, although a small amount of hydraulic oil leaked into the harbour, near the Arnolfini, which is being cleared with the help of environmental specialists.

The council said, "The centre span of Pero’s Bridge slipped from its previous position causing damage to the hydraulic ram, and a small section is now submerged in the harbour."

The bridge, which has been closed since August following a failed test lift, was previously stuck in a raised position.

Despite this latest setback, the council stated, "At present there is no confirmed impact to the maintenance and refurbishment programme. However, this remains under review pending engineering assessment and approval of the revised plans."

The reopening of the bridge is intended for Spring 2027.
