Bristol-based adventurer Jo Bailey is set to undertake a unique world record attempt at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta on the morning of 7th August 2026, weather permitting.

A year after facing life-threatening emergency surgeries, Jo, a former hot air balloon operator, will attempt 'Paloma’s Big Lift Off,' aiming for the highest number of tethered hopper balloon ascents within an hour.

The challenge is named after Jo’s stoma, affectionately called 'Paloma.'

Jo once owned Bailey Balloons, a renowned hot air balloon business in the South West, and now seeks to raise awareness about life after stoma surgery, encouraging those with severe illness or trauma to embrace adventure.

The undertaking will also fundraise for Crohn’s and Colitis UK and the intensive care unit at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital, the charities that supported Jo through her illness.

Reflecting on her journey, Jo said, “I nearly lost my life several times during my illness. There were moments when I wasn’t sure I’d ever get home, let alone return to the world of ballooning.

"This challenge isn’t really about records. It’s about showing people that life doesn’t end after major surgery. It can still be adventurous, fun and full of possibilities.”

Through The Paloma Diaries, Jo shares insights on recovery, living with an ileostomy, and finding positivity through challenging circumstances on social media.

The world record attempt is part of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, running from 7th to 9th August 2026 at Ashton Court Estate, featuring tethered ascents and costume changes.

Jo added: “If one person sees this and feels a little less afraid, a little more confident, or a little more able to say yes to life again, then it will have been worth every ascent.”
