Gloucester men jailed for involvement in £2.2 million money laundering scheme
SWROCU investigation dismantles organized crime group's operations
Two Gloucester men have been sentenced at Bristol Crown Court for their roles in laundering over £300,000 as part of a £2.2 million criminal operation orchestrated across Gloucestershire and Bristol.
Patrick White, 31, and Thomas Dainty, 31, received prison sentences of three years and eight months, and two years and nine months, respectively, after pleading guilty to their involvement in the scheme and related drug offences.
Led by Guiseppe Sangiovanni from Cheltenham, the organized crime group utilized Post Office branches and bank machines for transactions, converting laundered cash into cryptocurrency. Their criminal activities drew attention following suspicious cash deposits reported by financial services.
Sangiovanni was sentenced to six years and eight months in April after recruiting six men and one woman to execute the laundering operation. Sara Buffin, 43, who played a significant role in laundering over £1 million, received a three-year prison sentence in February.
The case, investigated by SWROCU with support from Gloucestershire Constabulary, exposed the group's extensive network of 1,168 transactions over four months, with individual amounts ranging from £93,000 to £1 million.
Peter Highway, who led the investigation, cited the ability to track involved parties through detailed transaction analysis. As authorities continue to secure confiscation orders for seized assets, the case underscores the collaborative efforts in targeting those facilitating money laundering activities.
Four men received suspended sentences in February, further dismantling the network.
The investigation highlights the importance of vigilance in combating organized financial crime and the resolve to hold culpable individuals accountable.
