Men’s Walk to Support returns with new 25-mile route for Dorothy House's 50th anniversary
Annual event aims to create space for men to share experiences and raise funds for end-of-life care
The Men's Walk to Support, organized by Dorothy House, is set to make its return on 14th March 2026, offering a unique opportunity for men to come together and share their experiences of grief and bereavement, while also raising vital funds for end-of-life care in the area.
Participants are invited to walk either solo or with companions, as they navigate the 8-mile walk, which welcomes men aged 8 and above, in a show of solidarity. New for 2026, in celebration of the Hospice’s 50th anniversary, the event introduces a 25-mile route commencing at The Bridge Inn, Horton Road, Devizes. This longer walk will join the 8-mile walkers along the Kennet and Avon Canal, culminating at Bath Pavilion.
The walk starts early, with the 25-mile route kicking off at 7am in Devizes and the 8-mile trek beginning at 11am from Dorothy House in Winsley. Participants will conclude their journey at Bath Pavilion in time to catch the day's Six Nations matches.
Creating Space for Conversation
The event is designed to encourage open conversations among men, recognizing that they often find side-by-side discussions more comfortable. A space for dialogue about mental health, grief, and bereavement is crucial as last year only 26% of people engaging in Dorothy House’s Bereavement Support Services were male. Research from charity Sue Ryder indicates that 80% of men feel alone in their grief, with over half admitting to bottling up their emotions.
Event Details
Entry to the Men’s Walk to Support is £28, which includes a free event t-shirt, a drink, and food at the end. Participants are encouraged to raise funds to support Dorothy House's provision of free end-of-life care, hoping to eclipse last year’s £115,000 in donations.
Dan Varley, a fundraiser at Dorothy House Hospice, emphasized the relaxed atmosphere of the event, with music, food, and drink available before participants embark on their walk. He noted the communal spirit that forms by the end, drawing people together who may have initially set out alone.
Celebrating and Contributing
Dorothy House welcomes participants walking in memory of loved ones, those currently receiving care, and anyone wishing to show support. After the walk, the camaraderie continues with food, drink, and rugby at the Bath Pavilion.
The Hospice has been serving communities for 50 years, offering personalized palliative and end-of-life care, supported by the contributions of local communities. Dorothy House urges everyone to come together on this special day to make a difference and celebrate life.
