Clevedon's cherished miniature railway at Salthouse Fields is poised for restoration, spearheaded by Emma Coles, daughter of the original operator, Len Harvey.

The railway, known for its iconic Rio Grande train, opened in 1952 but has seen years of neglect.

Coles and her family have now won the bid to rejuvenate the railway and were appointed as operators by North Somerset Council.

In their statement, the Coles family expressed their enthusiasm: "We are delighted to bring the Rio Grande back to Salthouse Fields — a place with countless childhood memories."

They added, "This is much more than a business opportunity; it allows us to continue a tradition started by our father Len and carried on by our late brother Simon."

"The restoration is a tribute to Len and Simon Harvey, aiming to respect its heritage and create something special for future generations," Coles said.

Council cabinet member Mike Solomon welcomed the family's plans, noting the personal connection and commitment aligns with the council’s vision for an inviting seafront.

"This is wonderful news for residents, visitors, and anyone with fond memories of the railway," Solomon said.

Broader Plans for Salthouse Fields

The restoration includes plans for a new indoor Station Cafe, adventure golf redevelopment, and a refresh of the children’s rides area.

North Somerset Council began seeking an operator last year as interest was spurred by the reopening of Portishead's commuter railway to Bristol, part of a £182m project.

Clevedon West councillor Luke Smith expressed anticipation for the miniature railway’s revival while North Somerset Council leader Mike Bell supported efforts to restore the beloved local attraction.

Network Rail is also progressing on Portishead's railway, actively engaging locals about ongoing work.

With the Coles family at the helm, Clevedon's miniature railway is set to embark on a revitalised journey, promising a vibrant future for Salthouse Fields.
