Families in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and Bath and North East Somerset are the first in the UK to access a new tool designed to help them find nearby childcare, understand costs, and manage budgets.

The government has rolled out a free childcare map in the West of England as part of a larger online initiative, targeting affordable childcare options for families and saving eligible parents an average of £8,000 per child annually.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has requested the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate hidden childcare fees and examine whether these practices truly serve families.

She is seeking clarity on non-refundable deposits and compulsory add-ons that could undermine the government's childcare funding.

"I grew up in a family that knew what it meant to count every penny," Phillipson said, “I am so proud of the crucial difference that 30 hours funded childcare makes to family finances, saving £8,000 a year per child on average," Phillipson said.

The first phase of the map is now live, highlighting nurseries and childminders in the region that offer funded childcare. Families nationwide will have access to the map later this year.

"We will continue to support families and ease the cost of living," said Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England.

"As we deliver our regional Child Poverty Action Plan together with local partners, there will be more action on affordable childcare."

The launch comes as the government directs a record investment of £9.5 billion into early years childcare, and seeks to ensure that the funded childcare promise is met across regions.

Additionally, the newly introduced GOV.UK Chat provides instant answers regarding childcare entitlements and support, making assistance accessible at any time.
