A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspicious item on Park Street in Bristol, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The force's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) unit carried out the controlled explosion as a precaution shortly after 11am on Friday (October 23rd).

Police said the cordon has been reduced as a result. They said work to reopen roads will begin as soon as possible.

What happened

Park Street was closed to motorists and pedestrians on Friday morning.

Police received a call at 8.25am from a member of the public who was concerned they had potentially witnessed a man leaving a suspicious item in the area.

As a precaution, a 50m cordon was put in place, which also included Hill Street, St George's Road and Frogmore Street.

At 10.50am, police said the cordon remained in place, EOD were at the scene and the road closures were still required.

Road closures

Police said Park Street is a significant part of the road network and they will ensure it is reopened at the earliest opportunity.

People had been asked to seek an alternative route in the meantime.
