Avon Fire and Rescue Service, along with ambulance crews and engineers from Wales & West Utilities, responded swiftly to the emergency.
Authorities urged the public to avoid Colston Street, as a heavy presence of emergency vehicles worked to isolate the leak and keep people safe.
FirstBus services were disrupted, and the Bristol Beacon was also evacuated as a precaution.
Engineers managed to secure the gas leak by 7:30pm, allowing evacuated residents and businesses to gradually return.
Wales & West Utilities confirmed there was no impact on local gas supplies during the incident.
Emergency services thanked the public for their patience and cooperation while the incident was brought under control.
