Bristol Central MP Carla Denyer has announced she will be taking several weeks off from her parliamentary duties to focus on her health and recovery.

The Green Party representative shared the news in a statement, explaining that she has been struggling with persistent health issues and symptoms of burnout as a result of her demanding workload.

Denyer, who has served as a councillor, worked for an MEP, and acted as co-leader of the Green Party before becoming an MP, said the decision was made following advice from her doctor.

She admitted that trying to balance her long hours and responsibilities with ongoing health problems was not sustainable, and taking a break is crucial for her recovery.

“I want to be open about the fact that what I am suffering from is burnout – and the mental and physical symptoms that arise from it,” Denyer said. “Burnout is a condition that does not tend to get better on its own. If left unmanaged, it can worsen and increase your risk of long-term health problems.”

She added that she hopes her openness about burnout will help remove stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to seek support if needed.

Denyer concluded her statement by thanking constituents for their understanding, expressing hope that time away will allow her to return to full health and continue representing Bristol Central.
