Bristol Birdman returns to the harbour
Businesses and charities are set to take to the skies and compete with flying machines in support of youth services
Bristol Birdman is set to take over the city's Floating Harbour on Sunday (14th June), as teams from businesses, charities, and community organisations compete to launch homemade flying machines in support of local young people.
Thousands of people are expected to head to the harbourside and watch the competition unfold.
This year's event will take place from 11 am to 3 pm, featuring 16 teams aiming to make their human-powered contraptions soar from a specially constructed platform into the harbour.
Returning champions, Bakehouse Factory, will defend their title against fellow business teams, including Clifton Coffee Roasters, Bristol Beer Factory, Urban Pursuit, MUTI Live, Yogscast Games, Origin Workspace and UWE Bristol.
Bristol Birdman serves as the primary annual fundraiser for Grassroot Communities CIC, a local social enterprise backing young people aged 8 to 30 from underserved communities.
Participants can also join a fancy-dress competition, with the winner either flying off the Birdman ramp or selecting a prize from the raffle table.
Funds raised help support the enterprise's year-round youth and community programs, including mentoring, internships, creative ventures, and pathways into employment.
Ben Carpenter, Founder of Grassroot Communities, said:
“The Grassroot Communities - Bristol Birdman event showcases all that is great about our city.
“A fantastical, fun, free, family-friendly event that brings people together of all ages and backgrounds to watch business and charity teams fly across the harbour with purpose!
“The aim is to support transformational youth and community work in the underserved communities of Bristol all year round.
“We cannot wait for lift off now!”
Attendees can anticipate a day of family-friendly entertainment with food and drink vendors, live commentary, and numerous chances to support the teams competing for glory.
Flying attempts will occur throughout the day with awards presented at 2:30 pm.
The event is free to attend, and organisers recommend arriving early to fully enjoy the programme and experience the unique atmosphere.
By supporting Bristol Birdman, you're helping young people and communities across Bristol to fly.
